Daniel J. Bissonette

What started out as a summer job at a resort on Michigan’s east side to obtain a tan became a labor of love for the game of golf.  Daniel J. Bissonette, was the golf course superintendent at Walloon Lake Country Club for 20 years. His college internship and subsequent assistant position was held with Tom Brogger at The Birchwood Farms Golf and Country Club in Harbor Springs. Prior to receiving his turfgrass education, he began as a key staff member at Lakewood Shores Golf and Country Club in Oscoda. Prior to the experience in the golf course industry, he gained an interest in agriculture while spending 10 years working within his families fresh produce and custom butcher business his parents owned near the Wurtsmith Air Force SAC Base.

His degree in golf course management education was obtained from Michigan State University with the late Dr. Kenyon T. Payne, a summer resident of Charlevoix, heading the Turfgrass Agronomy Program. He was a member of the Turf Club and his studies earned a place on the Dean’s List at MSU. Dan’s continuing education is forever ongoing including, attending the Great Lakes Trade Expo, the Golf Industry Show and local educational events held throughout the year. He is a Master Gardener and featured speaker at MG events annually. His “Class A” status was dictated by educational and community involvement certification requirements by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America.

In addition to his employment and education experience, Dan was asked by his peers to serve on various boards representing the industry on political and environmental issues. He is a Past President of the Michigan Golf Course Superintendents Association (MiGCSA).  He was on the steering committee to help form this new association merger of four regional superintendent groups for six years. He has chaired the Nominating and Website Development committee and was a member of the Communications committee for the MiGCSA. His previous tenure as President of the Northern Michigan Turf Managers Association no doubt lead to his appointment at a state level. While serving six years on the NMTMA Board, Dan was chair of various committees including Communications, Bylaws, Membership, Finance, Education and Events.

Philanthropic involvement arrived when Dan was elected to the Michigan Turfgrass Foundation Board more than seven years ago. The mission of the 501 (c) (3) corporation is to oversee the $1.5 million in assets utilized for education and research at Michigan State University in the field of agronomy. His committee responsibility on the Foundation Board is Co-chair of Grant Research. In addition, Dan has moderated many turfgrass events throughout his career.

Jeremy Bissonette – Chemical Spray Technician and Safety Coordinator

What started out as way for his father to keep an eye on his kid during the summer turned into a passion. Jeremy started out working at the Walloon Lake Country Club at an early age raking sand traps, filling divots and doing random tasks here and there. Once he was able to finally get paid at the course, he moved up to bigger and better things like mowing greens and working on equipment as needed.

In high school Jeremy’s career interest took a turn in a different direction where he worked in a kitchen at Lorenzo’s Restaurant.  He began as a dishwasher and worked his way on up the ranks. He finally becoming a saute’ cook after mastering every position in the kitchen. Jeremy worked in the food industry for about 6 years honing his cooking skills at Little Traverse Bay and Walloon Lake Country Club until his calling took him back to the golf course in which he went to cut grass for his father.

Jeremy learned even more this time back to the course in which he gained valuable skills such as irrigation management, golf course maintenance practices as well as receiving his State of Michigan certified pesticide license. Jeremy was the chemical technician at Walloon Lake Country Club.
